A Southern Reef

It goes without saying that being so close to these beautiful turtles is really a special privilege that not all have the chance to experience. The lucky part for me is that Flinders Reef is only a stones throw from my home town, the Gold Coast.

Flinders is a special little reef that I still know very little about, yet it blew me away the moment my eyes submerged below the calm surface. I had no idea that a reef with this much life and diversity could be so far south from the famous Great Barrier Reef. In all honesty I have never been on a better turtle dive and that includes many sites on the Great Barrier Reef.

One of the reasons why the turtles are so abundant in this area is because of a cleaning station in shallow water. The turtles come in like a car wash and let all of those small, yet extremely important cleaner fish of all varieties pick off algae and parasites. It’s a win win relationship for all parties including me.

I look forward to diving more sites on the reef, yet the turtle cleaning station will always be a special place to me from only two dives.

Big thanks to Sunreef Diving, Mooloolaba for taking me along on one of their trips out to Flinders. Highly recommended.
